The first time I saw Streight Angular I was sipping a New Castle at The Rosebud during the This Blue Heaven residency a few months back. The first thing I noticed (this is the first thing anyone notices) was -{holyshit Zack Morris and Osama Bin Laden had a love child that slipped past the CIA}. The last song of the set, and the first song I heard was "Everyone Is Synchopated" the blistering title track off their 2011 release. Yes kiddies, you read me right "blistering", say it, while listening to the track here, and you'll know what I mean. This song is on a short list to be included in The Management's Top 10 of '11, for sure. I may or may not have mentioned my inability to dance, in fact if you've ever seen me at a show, I kind of look like a refrigerator on the dance floor. Not so with with this cut, I'm wobblin' with the best of 'em. The normally infuriating "Oh oh oh oh oh's" become anthemic, my fist is pumping, my throat is raw from screaming along with Al and Theresa. I've been waiting with bated breath for the next release from these cats, thankfully they are never one to disappoint. Their newest release "Supermarché" blows "Everyone is Syncopated" out of the water. What I can only dub as "Punk and Roll", Streight Angular once again goes balls deep with the heart pumping fist pounding rock and fucking awesomeness. I can hear influences of surf rock and punk. This cut leaves studio perfection behind, and embraces the squishy love of the DIY construct. I can hear fingers on strings, off key background vocals, all of the stuff that normally drives me mad in a recording. Yet somehow, they pull it off, without apologies and thumbing their collective noses at the current expectation for what a recording should be. Streight Angular has once again given me something I didn't know I wanted, and now I want more.
"Supermarché" is being released October 1, 2011 and I highly recommend a listen, and if you get a chance, pick up the album. Al and Theresa are stand up folks, and they play a hell of a show. See event listings below to find out where they are playing next.
